Is your coin worth more than you think?
A small mistake at the mint can make an everyday coin worth thousands. AnyCoins checks every coin you scan for thousands of known errors and varieties. Here are five to look for in your change.
The 1955 doubled die penny
- What to look for
- The date and LIBERTY look doubled, like a shadow print.
- Why it's worth more
- The die that stamped these pennies was made with a doubled image, so every coin it struck came out doubled. About twenty thousand got into change.
The 1943 copper penny
- What to look for
- A 1943 penny that looks copper and doesn’t stick to a magnet.
- Why it's worth more
- In 1943 pennies were made of steel to save copper for the war. A few copper blanks were left in the presses, so a handful of copper 1943 pennies were struck.
The 1990 No S penny
- What to look for
- A shiny proof penny with no S under the date.
- Why it's worth more
- Proof pennies are struck in San Francisco and carry an S. One die went out without it, so a few proofs have no mint mark at all.
The Carson City Morgan dollar
- What to look for
- Two small letters, CC, under the wreath on the back.
- Why it's worth more
- CC means it was struck at the Carson City Mint in Nevada, which made far fewer coins than the other mints. About 1 in 50 Morgan dollars is a CC.
The spitting horse quarter
- What to look for
- A thin line coming out of the horse’s mouth on the 1999 Delaware quarter.
- Why it's worth more
- The die cracked, and every coin it struck after that came out with the same raised line.
Every coin was struck somewhere.
The small letter on a coin tells you which mint made it, and that can change its value. AnyCoins pins every coin you scan to the mint that struck it. What each mint mark means.
